[1] Initial Requirements
------------------------

Before applying to EsperNet, you and your site must meet the following basic
requirements:

1. You must be running some variant of Unix. Debian or Ubuntu are suggested, but
   all versions of Linux and BSDs are usable. Your system must be capable of
   running our IRCd with SSL enabled.
2. You must have a fixed IP address.
3. Your site must be up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the long term.
4. Your site must have a decently fast link. We recommend at least 1 gigabit
   symmetric.
5. Your server must run a time-synchronization daemon, such as NTP.

You must be an operator on an existing EsperNet server for at least 3 months
before becoming an EsperNet administrator.

You must also attach the results of one traceroute and one 24-hour-long ping to
each of the EsperNet servers. The delay between the ping requests should be 10
seconds (8640 pings per server).

The results of these pings and traceroutes should be attached to your
application. If any information is missing, your application will not be
accepted.

EsperNet users, server administrators and operators, and hub administrators.

As an administrator of an EsperNet server, you must care about EsperNet's
development by actively participating in its operation. Remember, you form the
backbone of this network, therefore the users rely on you. We need your support
to actively nurture EsperNet's spirit by being someone upon whom we can depend.
As such, we require that your server be available for the long term. If you're
interested in a "short-term" connection, please do not apply.
